Description

Description

We continue our 2-part workshop that we began in January.

In this session we will introduce the Rails half of Ruby on Rails.

What will be covered?

  • What happens when a browser requests a dynamic web page
  • What is a web framework? Why would you want one?
  • Dividing up code responsibilities with the Model, View, Controller architecture
  • Saving data in a database with Rails' object-relational mapper
  • Saving code snapshots with Git
  • Deploying a Rails application to the web with Heroku

At the end of the workshop you'll be able to define all of this jargon.

What will NOT be covered?

  • HTML and CSS - the art of making a web site look good
  • Programming basics. Our next Intro to Programming with Ruby workshop will be held in the fall.
  • Intermediate Rails. This is a basic tutorial for those who have never made a dynamic website with Rails.

When and Where?

Friday May 16 (7PM - 9PM) and Sat May 17th (9:30AM - 5PM)

at the Microsoft NERD Center in Cambridge, MA.

Prerequisites

This course is right for you if:

  • You have taken the January Ruby workshop, or a previous RailsBridge workshop and want a refresher

OR

  • You know Ruby at the level of Ruby in 100 Minutes - programming basics, how to run Ruby code in irb or from a file, and command line basics.

Don't worry if it's been a while since you used Ruby. We'll do a quick recap before moving into Rails.

This workshop is for women who are new to Ruby on Rails but men are welcome to attend if they attend as a guest of a woman registered for the event. You and your host must both register for tickets.

Boooo! I couldn't make it to Part 1! Why are you doing this?

Traditionally we taught both Ruby and Rails in the same workshop. We got consistent feedback that it was too much material, and that we should offer the material over a longer timeframe. We suspect that frustration discouraged people from sticking with it, and that's a real loss.

Our next Ruby workshop is tentatively scheduled for October.

Do I have to attend both days?

Yes, both days. On Friday night we meet one another and install all of the software you need for the workshop. Saturday we hit the ground running with writing code. Attendance at the Installfest is mandatory if you want to participate Saturday.

Who should attend?

Total programming novices, web designers, system administrators, and developers of other languages are welcome to attend.

What if I already know some Rails?

Experienced programmers should note that the class is geared to beginners. If you've completed the Hartl tutorial you've gone well past what we'll cover.

Consider coming to Boston Ruby's monthly project night instead. There are many friendly Rubyists available to help you over configuration bumps and answer questions.

What should I bring?

  • Your laptop. If it's a borrowed or work laptop, make sure you're able to install software on it.
  • Power cord for your laptop.

Will there be food?

Yes! We will provide dinner on Friday and lunch and snacks on Saturday.

We'll celebrate the conclusion of the workshop with drinks at a nearby bar.

Who should I contact with questions?
